PCC Sylvania HT Building West Side Renovation
Portland Community College’s Health Technology (HT) Building is a 213,500-square-foot facility located at the northwest corner of Sylvania, PCC’s original campus. Built in 1970, the four-story structure contains and supports a variety of academic, community, and athletic uses. Our project, a Design-Build partnership with Fortis Construction, fully renovates 77,655 square feet of space on the west side of the facility, uniting the two sides of the HT Building and completing a full upgrade that began on the east side in 2018.
Envisioned as a hub for health and wellness, the HT-West project centered on creating a welcoming environment that prioritizes equity and promotes interdisciplinary use of spaces. In addition to renovating outdated areas, the work includes the complete conversion of the existing gendered locker areas into a new inclusive locker room. This space, designed in collaboration with MIXdesign, features a central open locker area surrounded by a variety of individual spaces for private functions such as showering and changing.
The project also includes repurposing an existing natatorium space to create flexible new Exercise Science, Fitness, and Health Professions classrooms on two floors. To help unite the new spaces and connect them to the existing building and campus, a new skylit two-story gathering and circulation space is created along the north side of the former natatorium. This will bring daylight into the heart of the new program areas and provide a new accessible connection linking interior and exterior spaces on both levels.
